A storm blew in and foiled our cover shoot today, so we’re all bunkered down waiting for it to clear and will try again tomorrow, when the sun is scheduled to appear.
We spent the morning cruising the Bay of Islands on a 54-foot catamaran with a really lovely pair of Kiwis. Our photo crew arrives from Auckland and we’ll spend the evening preparing for tomorrow’s cover shoot and praying for good weather. For more images, see my gallery.

Bay of Islands impressions by the talented Korena Bolding.

The one that didn’t get away outside Taupo.
New friend Orini Gillies gave us a Maori greeting and introduced us to Waimarama.
Gannet colony, Cape Kidnappers.
Aroha Lamour, new favorite shop, in Napier.
A private helicopter trip across the Pacific to an active (and actively stinky) volcano, a walk to some lovely falls, and wishes that my family was here. Fully gallery here.
Gas masks and hard hats: the uniform of the well dressed volcanogoer.
After the most lovely long-haul flight of my life on Qantas (yay for business class!), Korena and I have arrived. It’s spring and there are ducklings playing by the river and everything is green, green, green. For more photos, see my gallery.

Just when you thought it was safe to go back to Ballard…
